Ah-Counter

Listens for filler words and sounds like um, ah, so, and like. Gives a brief report when called upon.

Role overview

As Ah-Counter, you help speakers become more aware of filler words and sounds used as crutches or pause fillers. You’ll listen throughout the meeting, keep a tally, and give a brief report when called upon.

When called to speak at the start of the meeting

I will count how many times a speaker will use words or sounds as a “crutch” or “pause filler” during the meeting. In addition, words may be inappropriate space filler words which do not add to what the speaker is trying to say. I will also count any repetition of words, for example: You know, I thought, etc. unless the repeated words are for the purpose of providing word emphasis.

What to track

Keep a tally for each speaker using categories like these:

• Words: And, Well, But, So, You Know
• Sounds: Ah, Um, Er, Hum, Huh
• Repeats: I, I / This, This / That, That (and similar double clutches)

Use the printable Ah-Counter Tracker PDF for a ready-made tally sheet, or note counts on paper during the meeting.

During the meeting

• Write down each speaker’s name as they speak.
• Tally filler words, sounds, and repeats as you hear them.
• Do not interrupt speakers—save your findings for the report.
