Getting started
Speaker
A member giving a prepared speech from their Pathways curriculum (usually 5 to 7 minutes).
Role overview
As Speaker, you deliver a prepared Pathways speech to the club. Most projects are about 5 to 7 minutes (your Ice Breaker is 4 to 6). This is how you practice writing, rehearsing, and presenting in front of a supportive audience — with an assigned evaluator to help you improve.
What to fill in on the agenda
After you sign up, open your speaker slot on the meeting agenda and use Edit speech details to add your title, Pathways project (when you have it), and timing if the form asks for it. You can update the details anytime before the meeting.
Before the meeting
- Choose and activate the Pathways project you are working on in Base Camp.
- Write and rehearse your speech so you are comfortable within the project’s time window.
- Print or download the project evaluation resource and bring it for your evaluator (or use the club’s form).
- Confirm your evaluator knows your project goals and anything you especially want feedback on.
- Arrive early so you can settle in and meet your evaluator.
During the meeting
- When the Toastmaster introduces you, walk to the lectern (or camera), pause, then begin.
- Speak clearly, stay within time, and focus on the project objectives.
- After your speech, listen carefully to your evaluation — it is how you grow for the next project.
After the meeting
- In Base Camp, complete Assess Your Skills — After for that project when you are ready.
- Save notes from your verbal and written evaluation for your next speech.
Tips for success
- Start with the Ice Breaker: a short speech about you — no need to wait months after joining.
- Practice out loud at least a few times; knowing your opening and closing well reduces nerves.
- Use the Timer’s signals so you finish gracefully within the green–yellow–red window.
